Unseen RailScene - Eastleigh Southern in miniature
Переглядів 1242 роки тому
In August 2016 there was a gathering of Southern locomotives in the town where they were designed and maintained - at least, the originals were! The Eastleigh Lakeside Railway saw trains hauled by "Channel Packet", "Lord Nelson", "Tonbridge" and "Crowborough" together with "Ernest Henry Upton" standing in for a Brighton Atlantic. All are exquisite scale miniatures: enjoy. I will be posting more...

This is an extract from a short programme I made of Soo Line #1003 in October 2008 on a Steam Loco Safaris charter which covered no less than five different railroads. The train starts at Fairwater on Sunday 5th October and is then seen at Randolf, on the Beaver Dam causeway and passing through Beaver Dam itself before reflecting on the success of this series of charters at Mill Pond in Fairwater.

Hornby T9 no 30119 for sale on ebay - test run with 15 coaches

I am constantly amazed by the strength of Hornby's little T9 4-4-0s. I have too many of them so am auctioning some of them, this being the second one of these no. 30119s which I have had to sell. It can haul 15 of Hornby's heavy Bulleid and Maunsell coaches - just watch and see (I put it down to the traction tyres!). The other locos in view at the start and end are NOT FOR SALE - ONLY THIS T9 IS!

    Jeremy if you still own the copyright to the original Railscene video footage then why not upload it to YT. At the time it was superb up to date footage but now it's fantastic archive footage. To stop people uploading your footage upload it yourself and claim ownership of it. You could also upload the Railtours, Railscale and Newsviews footage if you still own the copyright to that footage too.

    You must have been rather upset Jeremy when the NYMR decided to "gas axe" Southern Maunsell 841 in favour of 825. Although not a diehard Southern Railway fan like yourself (I like Western and Midland) it seemed a bit odd to me that an engine that had been restored to working order should be scrapped in favour of one that hadn't be restored.

    Wonderful footage but it would be from a professional cameraman but such a shame two steam locos can't run in parallel in the UK for they do in Germany and Australia and we're even more H&S fanatics than you are. The only time I can remember it was done was with a class 33 and 34092 City of Wells between Salisbury and Yeovil Such a pity it was a one off for here in Australia and specifically NSW we have a Great Train Race twice a year which isn't actually a race but parallel running and here's the Sydney race in 2018 between 1917 4-6-0 and a 1953 4-8-4+4-8-4 Garratt. It's amazing the number of stations that have English names. Take a look at this link Jeremy for a bit of fun Aussie style. ua-cam.com/video/vgUS80C85zU/v-deo.htmlsi=5sfiVSzEXvUbVuFC

    I grew up in Dorking, and the 'Tadpole' thumpers ran on the Reading-Tonbridge line when i was a kid in the 70s. Such a wonderful sound. They had more of a standard blast horn though. They look rather stately and almost frail in the green livery and slow speeds. Back in the day they were lovely noisy, shaky, filthy beasts in blue and yellow! Love that old ticking sound at 9:00 you got from these and most of the EMUs and Underground Trains. 9:37 that could be me standing on the platform at Gomshall, waiting for it to go past so we could cross the tracks to get to meet my Grandpa in his car (there was no footbridge then)

    I hope to see the 4014 and the 3985 double heading someday! Too bad some bright boy at UP decided the 3985 is no longer wanted because of 4014 being in service. They have announced they are giving the 3985 to another steam program for them to overhaul and use for that group's excursions.

    • @blackbirdgaming8147
      @blackbirdgaming8147 2 роки тому

      3985 is in poor mechanical condition, too poor to warrant doing the work on it for UP. That’s why it was donated. Ed loves 3985, and he felt the best chance it had to run again was donating it to RRHMA.

    • @blackbirdgaming8147
      @blackbirdgaming8147 Рік тому

      @@MTHDCS That is simply a testament to the durability of the engine that Steve could beat the shit out of it even when it was in poor condition, and it would still run. Recent photos from the tear down have shown questionable tube sheet welds, as well as a fair bit of scale and sediment in the boiler. The front engine has not been out from under the locomotive since the 50s, and was not known to track well because of this. The dynamo was a known problem on 3985, so much so that a hammer was rigged to a cord that was labeled “If dynamo quits, pull this hard.” Coal dust was found in telltale holes of staybolts. The locomotive hasn’t been coal fired since 1990. At one point towards the end, a Lempor exhaust was trialed to improve draft and thus make steaming better, instead of doing the sensible thing and keeping the boiler interior clean. Ed Dickens notes that 844 consumes 10 gallons of fuel per mile, and 125 gallons of water per mile. 4014 consumes 23 gallons of fuel per mile, and 250 gallons of water per mile. In comparison, 3985 consumed 35+ gallons of fuel per mile, and a proportional increase of water consumption. But go ahead, think I’m some foamer who hasn’t done the research.

    Wonderful footage of a fabulous loco. She looks resplendent in that lighter variant of BR Blue livery, however, only a handful of the class actually ran in that colour scheme with the attractive small yellow warning panels, I think the following seven did:- 17/30/36/37/43/47 & 57 - 1015 wasn`t one of them! Nice to see it for reference though as the ones which did run in service like that are all scrapped. Incidentally, this livery was often called `Chromatic Blue`, a metallic colour which I don`t think ever existed on any BR locomotive.
